Field Kit
The Chalk & Compass Field Kit is a quarterly experiment in making higher education a little more tangible, creative, and human.
Each Field Kit is a small envelope of ideas for people building and sustaining art, design, and creative institutions. Part publication, part professional resource, and part art project, every edition explores a question we think deserves more attention from assessment and enrollment to community, curriculum, leadership, and institutional change.
Inside, you might find a tiny zine, a practical tool, a provocative question, a pencil, a sticker, a strange diagram, or something we simply couldn't resist making.
The Field Kit reflects how we approach our work at Chalk and Compass: serious about the challenges facing higher education, curious about better ways of addressing them, and convinced that rigor and creativity belong in the same room. Not everything needs to be another white paper, webinar, or 47-slide deck.
Sometimes a good idea should arrive in the mail.
Field Kit Contents
Each Quarterly Field Kit Contains:
The Field Note — an artful mini-zine tackling one substantial art and design higher-ed question.
The Tiny Tool — something immediately usable: a one-page assessment exercise, conversation prompt, meeting activity, decision-making matrix, or data worksheet.
The Artifact — sticker, pencil, postcard, bookmark, ruler, foldout, temporary tattoo, mini poster, etc.
The Provocation — a card with one excellent question to take into a cabinet meeting, faculty meeting, retreat, or planning session.
From the Margins — something more personal and strange from the minds of Chalk and Compass: a drawing, annotated chart, field observation, absurd higher-ed diagram, quotation, tiny essay, or "thing we can't stop thinking about."
One Useful Thing — a recommendation for a book, article, dataset, organization, artist, methodology, or tool worth knowing.
